In basketball, especially college basketball, everyone knows that a crowd can deeply influence a game. Basketball is difficult on its own, but it’s even tougher when the screams of thousands of fans adequately disrupt the players’ focus.
One Pitt fan — a member of the band, as it turns out — took his job as a disruptor very, very seriously Tuesday night during the Panthers’ ACC Tournament matchup against Stanford.
Appearing to sound very intoxicated, the fan — Soren Henkle, according to The Athletic’s David Ubben — very loudly sang the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris” during Stanford free throw attempts, to the amusement of the announcers calling the game.
Not a Goo Goo Dolls fan? Don’t worry, our hero decided to switch it up a bit later in the half, this time opting for Creed’s “Higher:”
For what it’s worth, we can’t rule out the effectiveness of this move. Pitt went on to win by 1 point, 64-63, to advance to Wednesday’s 2nd-round matchup against NC State. Stanford finished 5-6 at the free throw line, missing this attempt while the Pitt fan sang The Cranberries’ “Linger.”
Here’s a look at the latest odds to win the ACC Tournament, per Kalshi. As you can see, Pitt is listed as having just a 1% chance.
