Texas A&M basketball coach Bucky McMillan calls program a ‘sleeping giant’

Southeastern Conference basketball has enjoyed quite a renaissance period in recent years, with Florida capturing its third national title last season and several conference programs also earning Final Four berths.
Texas A&M is not among those elite SEC programs yet, but at 16-4 overall and a league-best 6-1 mark in conference play, Aggies coach Bucky McMillan thinks that is all about to change.
“Texas A&M basketball is a sleeping giant,” McMillan said Monday night on the Aggie Basketball Hour. “A&M has been right there, they’ve gotten to the Sweet 16. We’re going to knock the door down in the second weekend and then it’s going to become an expectation here.”

Texas A&M is no stranger to the NCAA Tournament, earning three straight appearances in the Big Dance and 17 overall spots in the bracket. Of those 17 trips, the Aggies have earned a spot in the Sweet 16 six times – the most recent coming in 2018.
McMillan took over for the 2025-26 season after Buzz Williams departed College Station for Maryland after earning three NCAA Tournament bids including a No. 4 seed in the 2024-25 tournament. McMillan was a success at Samford – posting a 99-52 overall record that included four consecutive 20-win seasons with the Bulldogs.
