Texas A&M reportedly looking at sitting SEC head coach as ‘primary candidate’
Texas A&M is considering Ole Miss head coach Chris Beard for its head coaching vacancy, according to a report.
That’s according to a report from college basketball insider Jeff Goodman, who said Beard will be amongst the “primary candidates” for the role. However, it remains to be seen whether or not Beard would consider a return to the Lone Star state.
Beard just wrapped up his 2nd season at Ole Miss. He brought the Rebels to the Sweet 16 this year — their first trip to that stage since 2001.
Beard is a Texas alum and was the Longhorns’ head coach from 2021-23. Beard was fired by Texas midway through the 2022-23 season after he was arrested on assault charges. Those charges were later dropped.
Prior to taking the Texas job, Beard had a very successful stint at Texas Tech where he led the Red Raiders all the way to the National Championship game back 2021.
Texas A&M is looking to find a replacement for Buzz Williams, who left for the Maryland job earlier this week. Williams spent 6 seasons in College Station and led the Aggies to the NCAA Tournament 3 times.
