Florida is coming off its first national title on the hardwood since 2007, and the Gators are rewarding head coach Todd Golden with a massive new deal, according to reports on Tuesday.

College basketball insider Jeff Goodman reported on the news with what is expected to be a 6-year deal that will put Golden among the highest-paid coaches in the country. At just 39 years old, Golden has his first title in just his 3rd season in Gainesville leading Florida basketball, and he could be building toward a truly special run.

Goodman reports the deal will be worth $40.5 million, for an average of $6.75 million annually.

According to USA TODAY’s coaching salary database, Kansas head coach Bill Self was the highest-paid coach in the country at just shy of $9 million. Five coaches in the country made at least $6 million last season.

Golden began his ascent as a college coach as a key assistant for Bruce Pearl at Auburn. After that, he led San Francisco for 3 seasons, including a March Madness appearance for the Dons.

After arriving at Florida, the Gators missed the NCAA Tournament entirely in his first season but found their footing in Year 2. This season, Florida rolled to the SEC Tournament title before embarking on one of the legendary runs in March Madness history.
