UConn extends incredible Final Four record with win over Illinois

UConn gets to the Final Four a lot, and when it does the Huskies are almost a certainty to prevail and win the title.

That’s not an opinion. Just look at the facts and the longstanding trend, which continued on Saturday night in Indianapolis, where the Huskies held off Illinois, 71-62, in a national semifinal to advance to Monday night’s national title game against either Michigan or Arizona.

With the victory, UConn improved to a remarkable 13-1 in its illustrious Final Four history. Not surprisingly, its .929 winning percentage in the Final Four is the best by any program, with a minimum of 3 games included in the stat.

The math is easy to do in getting to the 13-1 record. UConn has won national titles in 1999, 2004, 2011, 2014, 2023 and 2024, so that’s 2 Final Four victories on the way to each title, which makes 12 wins. Then add Saturday night’s victory and you get 13 Final Four victories, with a chance for No. 14 on Monday night.

What was that 1 Final Four loss? That came in 2009, when Michigan State did what nobody else has done — still — in beating UConn, 82-73, in the Final Four semifinals. That’s it. Other than that 1 off night, it’s been a perfect Final Four slate for the Huskies.

UConn has bullied its way into the national title game for the third time in four years. The Huskies are waiting for their opponent now on Monday night, and here is what the Kalshi market odds are currently saying about the 3 teams with a chance to cut down the nets in Indianapolis:
