My Round 1 NCAA Tournament picks
Jaime Jaquez Jr. “higher” 0.5 points. This is the no-brainer of the week. Jaquez averaged 17.3 points per game this season to lead UCLA. Jaquez has scored at least 7 points in every game he’s played this year. Take the “higher” option and don’t look back!
Since you need to pick a player from another team other than UCLA to legitimize the contest on Underdog, here are a few options I like:
Taylor Funk “higher” 21.5 points+rebounds+assists. Funk’s Utah State team plays Mizzou on Thursday in Sacramento. At 6-9, Funk is one of the Aggies’ bigger players. The Tigers also don’t have much size. Look for Funk to get some paint touches and have plenty of opportunities for rebounds against a Mizzou team that doesn’t defend or rebound well.
Jalen Wilson “higher” 30.5 points+rebounds+assists. Howard, Kansas’s first-round opponent, is the fourth-worst team to make the NCAA Tournament field, per KenPom, who has the Bison ranked No. 215 nationally. Wilson is a do-it-all playmaker for the reigning champion Jayhawks. I expect him to pile up the stats early against an overmatched Howard team.
Nick Smith Jr. “higher” 20.5 points+rebounds+assists. Smith and the Arkansas Razorbacks take on an erratic Illinois team in Round 1 on Thursday. The NCAA Tournament will be Smith’s last chance to impress NBA scouts, as his draft stock has fallen due to an inconsistent and injury-plagued freshman season with the Razorbacks.
How many picks should you make?
The more picks you string together, the higher the “multiplier” or payout. Of course, the more you string together, the less likely you are to win because all of the picks have to hit in order for you to win.
A 4-way parlay of the picks I listed above would pay out $100 on a $10 entry:
Obviously, you should take Jaquez as 1 of the parts of your contest. If you don’t want to play a 4-way parlay, pick what player’s stats you like best and add that to Jaquez’s point total. Just make sure you get in on the action before Round 1 tips off on Thursday!
