The ACC’s attention in recent weeks on an alliance with the Big Ten and Pac-12 isn’t the only major move the conference is considering.

The ACC is formally exploring whether to move from its original home of Greensboro, N.C., the Richmond Times-Dispatch has learned.

On Feb. 1, new ACC commissioner Jim Phillips succeeded the long-time commissioner John Swofford. He is the first of the conferenceโ€™s 5 commissioners not to have a direct ACC connection โ€” he worked at league member Notre Dame when the Fighting Irish competed in the Big East.

There are 2 consulting teams meeting with staff members, campus leadership and Greensboro officials. Phillips expects their recommendations by mid-November.

โ€œIf youโ€™re going to do an assessment, I have a responsibility to do it in a complete manner,โ€ Phillips said in an exclusive interview, โ€œand it wouldnโ€™t be complete unless we looked at [potential relocation] as well. โ€ฆ Greensboro has been amazing. Iโ€™ve loved it. The communityโ€™s fantastic, the office is great, the location of the office is great.

โ€œBut โ€ฆ it canโ€™t just be the emotional tie. It has to make a lot of sense.โ€
