The ACC’s attention in recent weeks on an alliance with the Big Ten and Pac-12 isn’t the only major move the conference is considering.
The ACC is formally exploring whether to move from its original home of Greensboro, N.C., the Richmond Times-Dispatch has learned.
On Feb. 1, new ACC commissioner Jim Phillips succeeded the long-time commissioner John Swofford. He is the first of the conferenceโs 5 commissioners not to have a direct ACC connection โ he worked at league member Notre Dame when the Fighting Irish competed in the Big East.
There are 2 consulting teams meeting with staff members, campus leadership and Greensboro officials. Phillips expects their recommendations by mid-November.
โIf youโre going to do an assessment, I have a responsibility to do it in a complete manner,โ Phillips said in an exclusive interview, โand it wouldnโt be complete unless we looked at [potential relocation] as well. โฆ Greensboro has been amazing. Iโve loved it. The communityโs fantastic, the office is great, the location of the office is great.
โBut โฆ it canโt just be the emotional tie. It has to make a lot of sense.โ
