Alabama fans are going through it after the Crimson Tide lost their season-opener to Florida State in Week 1, 31-17.
All off-season, the talk had been about how the team was ready to send a message and get back to being Alabama. Instead, the season-opening result has Crimson Tide fans trying to figure out what the buyout would be to get rid of Kalen DeBoer.
Some fans are already trying to work out who the next coach should be. One fan, calling in to a national radio show on SiriusXM, suggested that Vanderbilt head coach Clark Lea should be the guy.
Lea is an interesting choice, as he was the first coach to give DeBoer a loss at Alabama. Last season, the Commodores beat the Crimson Tide 40-35 for the program’s first win ever in 61 tries against a top-5 team.
In his fifth year at Vandy, Lea has a 17-33 overall record. He had 3 losing seasons to begin his tenure before going 7-6 last fall.
DeBoer’s $70 million buyout alone makes it highly unlikely the Crimson Tide are anywhere near the point of letting DeBoer go. However, the fact that a fan was throwing out the Vanderbilt coach as the guy who should be the next Alabama coach shows what the mindset is in Tuscaloosa right now.
The Crimson Tide have 2 games and a bye to get things right before they travel to Athens to take on Georgia in a rematch from last season’s 41-34 victory for Alabama.
