Not even Clemson’s first-half performance against Alabama in the national championship in January matched this output by LSU.
The 33-13 halftime deficit to LSU by Alabama was the most points yielded by a Nick Saban-coached Alabama team. Clemson scored 31 points in the first half of the national championship. As Cole Cubelic of the SEC Network pointed out for context, LSU had 26 combined points in the last four games against Alabama.
There were a host of reasons for the lopsided score.
LSU QB Joe Burrow was 18-for-20 passing for 252 yards, and the Tigers averaged three yards per rush for 57 rushing yards. Burrow himself had eight carries for 31 yards with a long of 19. Four LSU receivers made at least four catches, led by Ja’Marr Chase with four catches for 105 yards The Tigers also had just two penalties compared to six for the Crimson Tide for 38 yards.
LSU also controlled the time of possession, 17:51 to 12:09.
Rest assured there will be plenty of adjustments at halftime, so it’ll be interesting to see how they shake out in the second half.
33 points is the most points in a single half allowed by Alabama under Nick Saban.
