Alabama working on contract extension for AD Greg Byrne, per report

Alabama AD Greg Byrne has overseen one of the nation’s top athletic departments since his arrival from Arizona nearly 10 years ago.
Despite Byrne’s contract expiring in July 2031, the university apparently wants to keep him in the fold for longer. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Alabama “is amid the process” of putting together a contract extension that would see Byrne remain in the role through July 2033. The Board of Trustees’ compensation committee will meet on Monday to discuss.
Under Byrne, the Crimson Tide’s football program has won a pair of national championships. The men’s basketball team has found itself on a historic run under Nate Oats, appearing in its first-ever Final Four in 2024. In 2026, Alabama made its first College World Series appearance since 1999, while the softball program has made five Women’s College World Series appearances since Byrne’s arrival.
But the most significant decision Byrne has faced as AD came after the retirement of Nick Saban. News broke of Saban’s decision on Jan. 10, 2024. About 48 hours later, Kalen DeBoer was hired after two seasons at Washington. DeBoer is 24-8 at the helm of the Tide.
Byrne arrived in 2017 to replace Bill Battle, who retired after four years.
