Alex Faedo, a notable prospect in the Detroit Tigers’ farm system and former Florida ace, will make his Major League Baseball debut on Wednesday as part of a double header against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Faedo was the 2017 College World Series Most Outstanding Player and a USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award semifinalist that same year. That season, Faedo finished his career with the highest win percentage in school history at .824 – 28-6 record), and played in 20 games with 19 starts and posted a 9-2 record with a 2.26 earned run average.
Faedo will make the start nearly 5 years after the Tigers made him a first-round pick, and he’ll make his debut at Comerica Park.

Faedo, 26, was the Tigers’ No. 18 overall pick in 2017, and he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2020 and pitched in his first game in more than 2 years in March. Although he was always destined for a Toledo assignment, Faedo spent the first few weeks of the season at Class A Lakeland in order to pitch in a reliable, warm-weather climate, MLive.com reported.
He’ll serve as the 27th man on Wednesday, which means he’ll likely be returned to Toledo after the game no matter what happens. But if he pitches well — or even if he doesn’t — he could be an option to return to the big-league club as early as Sunday.
