One of the most popular game show hosts passed away on Sunday as Jeopardy! announced about the beloved host, Alex Trebek, died. He was 80.
Trebek was Jeopardy!’s host since 1984, and he was known for his measured, yet witty responses to contests on the question-and-answer game show.
Trebek had battled stage 4 pancreatic cancer since he announced the news in March 2019. He immediately started chemo after the diagnosis but made no plans to retire and continued hosting the show.
Trebek, a native of Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, and his wife, Jean Currivan, have two children, the Associated Press reported.
Ken Jennings, a longtime “Jeopardy!” player who took part in the show’s “All-Star Games,” posted a tweet in March, 2019 in which he compared Trebek to the late TV journalist Walter Cronkite.
“I’ve said this before but Alex Trebek is in a way the last Cronkite: authoritative, reassuring TV voice you hear every night, almost to the point of ritual,” Jennings wrote.
