Andy Staples watched last Saturday’s shocking upset when the Alabama Crimson Tide were dominated, 31-17 by the Florida State Seminoles. The Crimson Tide had been talking all off-season how they were ready to put last season behind them and once again make a run at the College Football Playoff.

With that loss, fans are already calling for Kalen DeBoer to be fired. While it is a little early for that, Staples said that an 8-4 regular season would end the DeBoer era in Tuscaloosa.

“If you have 3 more losses like that this year, he’s going to be fired,” Staples said. “I don’t care how big the buyout is. It’s Alabama. You can’t go 8-4.”

In DeBoer’s first year, the Crimson Tide went 9-4, failing to win at least 10 games for the first time in 17 seasons. What makes the loss to Florida State so surprising is that DeBoer is known for his teams taking a giant step in the second year. In his first three head coaching jobs (Sioux Falls, Fresno State and Washington), his teams won at least two more games than they did the previous year.

If Alabama is able to recover and do just that, then the firing calls will calm down in Tuscaloosa. However, the Crimson Tide have one of the toughest schedules in the country.

They finish the non-conference part of their schedule with home games against Louisiana-Monroe and Wisconsin, before the SEC opener at Georgia after a bye week.
