South Carolina may not have passed the eye test during Saturday’s must-win at Vanderbilt judging by Steve Spurrier’s post-game tirade, but it kept the Gamecocks afloat in Sunday’s Associated Press Week 5 Top 25 Poll after the preseason Eastern Division favorite moved up a spot to No. 13.

It’s important to note that South Carolina’s early-season resume appears better than it once did after East Carolina catapulted into the rankings at No. 23 this week following a 70-41 win over North Carolina. The Pirates, a non Power 5 sleeper, are now 2-0 this season against teams from the ACC’s Coastal Division.

South Carolina returns to Williams-Brice Stadium next week for a College GameDay-hosted battle with Mizzou, the defending Eastern Division champions. The Tigers dropped out of this week’s rankings after a home loss to Indiana.
