Arch Manning heard all the talk over the last couple of weeks as Texas entered the game against Ole Miss having lost two consecutive games since becoming the No. 1-ranked team in the country. Because of the Longhorns’ skid, calls had been made to bench Manning.
Despite all that criticism, Manning was able to respond on Saturday night and help the Longhorns knock off the Rebels, 31-24.
After the game, Manning told reporters that he didn’t mind all the talk, and actually, he kind of enjoyed it.
“I have been hyped up all my life, preseason and all of that stuff,” Manning said. “I kind of like being disregarded and counted out.”
While he was all smiles, it was another up-and-down performance. He was 18-of-30 for 212 yards, one touchdown, and two rushing touchdowns. He also finished with two interceptions, including a terrible decision that gave the Rebels the ball back just after they had erased a 21-point deficit to tie the game.
For Manning and the Longhorns, they needed to get a win in that game in the worst way. However, if the Longhorns are going to make a serious run at the SEC and the College Football Playoff, then they are going to have to continue to start playing better.
The Longhorns will be back in action in Week 9 when they host the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
