The 22nd-ranked Texas Longhorns were able to escape Starkville with a 45-38 overtime victory Saturday against Mississippi State, but without a significant injury.
Brandon Zimmerman shared Sunday morning that a source told ESPN that Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning sustained a concussion during the overtime session against the Bulldogs. The injury could keep Manning from taking the field next weekend at home against No. 10 Vanderbilt.
Manning dropped to throw on Texas’ first play in overtime, scrambled up the middle when he couldn’t find a receiver and gained 13 yards. But in the process, while he was being tackled by Mississippi State’s Isaac Smith, Manning was also hit from behind by MSU’s Kedrick Bingley-Jones.
Texas offensive lineman Brandon Baker tried to help Manning to his feet, but the once-Heisman contender eventually sat back to the grass summoned trainers. Manning left the field under his own power but was still in the Texas medical tent when backup quarterback Matthew Caldwell hit Emmett Mosley V for a touchdown pass and still there at the end of the game.
Manning’s final stat line was impressive, going 29-for-46 for 346 yards, 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. He also rushed 10 times for 6 yards.
