Art Briles was recently hired as Grambling State’s offensive coordinator. Briles, however, isn’t officially a full-time member of Hue Jackson’s staff just yet, Koki Riley of the Monore News-Star points out.
This week, Grambling State confirmed reports of Briles being hired and directed media outlets to a TV interview in place of a formal press release. The Monore News-Star report points out that Briles won’t officially be a full-time Grambling State assistant coach until he is confirmed by the University of Louisiana System:
Grambling had yet to notify the University of Louisiana System that it intends to hire Briles as of Friday evening. Once that happens, Briles will still need a majority vote from the 16-member board to formalize his hiring and join first-year coach Hue Jackson’s staff. The board’s next meeting is set for April 28.
Riley notes that the board has not denied a coach’s contract or term sheet in the last 5 years. The Briles hire, though, has been met by noted criticism at prominent outlets. Briles was fired by Baylor after an investigation regarding multiple accusations of sexual assault involving football players.
“It’s up to the board and our board takes things very seriously,” Cami Geisman, vice president of external affairs and chief of staff for the UL System, told Riley. “They’re not a rubber-stamp board by any means.”
Briles had been out of college football since his 2016 firing from Baylor. He recently coached for a Texas high school and an Italian professional team.
