Auburn has landed a commitment from Atlanta (Ga.) Midtown tight end Kentrell White.

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound tight end announced his commitment to coach Hugh Freeze and the Tigers on Friday. He chose Auburn over Virginia Tech, a school that hosted him on an official visit just a few weeks ago.

“It’s Auburn because if I want to go big I need to play at a big school where I can make big plays,” White said in an interview with Auburn Undercover.

White is a 3-star recruit in the industry-generated 247 Composite. He ranks as the No. 65 tight end in the class and the No. 134 prospect from the Peach State. In the national player rankings, he sits at No. 1243 overall. White played the bulk of his snaps as a junior at wide receiver and defensive back, but Auburn is reportedly recruiting him to play a hybrid tight end role in Freeze’s offense.

White also handled some return duties for Midtown High. Additionally, he runs track and is a 2-time regional qualifier in both the 100m and 200m dashes.

His commitment comes at a time of great need for Auburn. Earlier this week, Freeze admitted it was “hard to feel great” about the state of the Auburn class heading into July. The Tigers had just 6 public commitments prior to White’s pledge, and the group ranked last in the SEC, according to the 247 Composite.

The addition of White bumps the Tigers up to 84th nationally. He’s the third commit since June 24, so perhaps Auburn can start to generate some buzz on the trail and close the gap between itself and its SEC peers. Freeze has signed consecutive top-10 classes over the last 2 cycles, so the slow start doesn’t necessarily guarantee a poor finish.
