Auburn’s Eric Winters clinches win over Baylor with desperate tackle on 2-point conversion

Auburn defeated Baylor 17-16 in Atlanta on Saturday night by the slimmest of margins.
After the Bears drove down the field in the game’s final minutes to pull within one point, Baylor head coach Dave Aranda opted to go for 2 — and the win — after Gavin Freeman’s TD with 9 seconds to go.
DJ Lagway, who had an up-and-down game, found an open receiver on the decisive 2-point conversion attempt, but the throw was just behind him. The ball was still caught, but the poor placement allowed Auburn‘s Eric Winters to make the tackle just before Baylor broke the plane.

This is a massive result for an Auburn program playing its first-ever game under new head coach Alex Golesh. The Tigers led for most of the game, but were unable to pull away from Baylor due to mistakes on both sides of the ball.
In his Auburn debut, quarterback Byrum Brown threw for 259 yards, but also tossed 3 interceptions to help keep Baylor in the game. Jeremiah Cobb was Auburn’s leading rusher with 53 yards.
Auburn will face Southern Miss in Week 2.
