Former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones was benched after throwing an interception in Monday night’s loss to the Chicago Bears.
Head coach Bill Belichick opted for Western Kentucky freshman quarterback Bailey Zappe instead. Zappe started strong, but began to struggle as the game progressed, eventually losing, 33-14.
Belichick dodged questions on Jones’ future as the starting quarterback moving forward Tuesday morning.
Belichick AM press conference:
Reporter: If Mac Jones is healthy, is he the starter?
Belichick: “Uhhh, again, that’s a hypothetical question. Let’s see where that is and what that is.”

Reporter: Bill, was Mac Jones healthy enough to play the whole game?
Belichick: “Well, that didn’t happen. So, that’s another hypothetical question.”

Belichick is know to not want to entertain media on his football team’s movements. Jones, for what it’s worth, has been solid, if not one-dimensional for the Patriots so far in his career.
We’ll see about his starting status next week against the Jets.
