Bill Hancock — Executive Director for the College Football Playoff — met with CFP commissioners on Wednesday. On the docket were a number of issues related to the future format of the expanded Playoff.

In comments to the media, Hancock described Wednesday’s meeting as “cordial” and “productive.” He also said there was progress made regarding the operational pieces of the new, 12-team Playoff. Hancock also revealed families of student-athletes will receive a stipend for travel to all rounds.

One item that was expected to be addressed is the format for the 12-team Playoff. Upon creation, the 12-team model was designed to take the 6 highest-ranked conference champions and the next 6 highest ranked at-large teams.

With the Pac-12 disintegrating, there has been chatter about that model being shifted to the 5 highest-ranked conference champions and the next 7 highest-ranked at-large teams. However, Hancock said Wednesday that the CFP is going to “wait until the dust settles before making any decisions” that might impact the Playoff.

“It would be premature to play musical chairs until you know how many chairs you have,” Hancock said per Nicole Auerbach.

Hancock also confirmed current Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff was in attendance and noted the Pac-12 is a member of the group until at least June 30, 2024. Anything beyond that remains to be seen.
