What can blue do for you? Plenty if you’re Boise State.
The Broncos’ blue turf is one of most unique aspects in all of college football. For the 40th anniversary of the playing surface, the program is unveiling a custom helmet to pay tribute to its legacy.
Boise State will wear the hand-painted helmets created by artist Armando Villarreal, for it’s home opener vs. Memphis on Sept. 12. The helmet has a textured version of the blue turf along with the number 40, a Bronco, and the outline of Idaho.
Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey encapsulated the significance of the program’s distinctive field.
“The Blue isn’t just a football field. It’s a symbol of innovation and when you believe in what’s possible, you can achieve EPIC! It has welcomed thousands of fans from all 50 states and around the world to experience Boise State, Boise and Idaho on gamedays and non-gamedays,” Dickey said. “We look forward to honoring The Blue and all that it represents with these unique anniversary helmets to be worn by our football program! What’s Next!”

Over the decades, Boise State has evolved into one of the top small conference programs. The Broncos have rode the blue turf to sustained success, including a trip to the College Football Playoff in 2024.
Now as a member of the Pac-12, Boise State will travel to No. 2 Oregon in Week 1 before showcasing its helmets. The Broncos went 9-5 last season and haven’t had a losing record since 1997.
