Among many notable early storylines in college football has been the resurgence of Oklahoma, and while a much-improved defense has played a large factor in that, it’s hard to look at anybody other than new quarterback John Mateer as the primary reason.

The former Washington State signal-caller guided the Sooners to a gutsy 24-17 win over Auburn on Saturday, with him tallying 271 yards through the air, 29 on the ground and 2 total touchdowns.

Following another standout performance from Mateer, ESPN’s Booger McFarland took to Twitter/X to share his thoughts on the Oklahoma quarterback’s impact.

“No player has changed the outlook of a team more than John Mateer has for Oklahoma,” McFarland wrote. “[I] said after the first game that he would win the Heisman, and through 4 games nothing has changed.”

While the Heisman Trophy nod may seem like a bold call, Mateer has the numbers and big-game moments to back it up. He’s already thrown for 1,215 yards on 67.4% completion, and he’s tacked on 190 yards rushing as well. And after he racked up 44 total touchdowns in Pullman last year, Mateer is actually on pace for exactly that number again, as he has 11 total scores through 4 games.

And something else that may help Mateer’s Heisman case is OU’s schedule. The Sooners still have to face Texas, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri and LSU, meaning that Mateer could have plenty more Heisman moments.
