Brent Venables comments on David Stone injury, clarifies circumstances

Oklahoma coach Brent Venables had some encouraging news on a situation that worried many Sooners fans.
On Tuesday, Venables shared the latest on Oklahoma DT David Stone. Late Monday, it was reported that Stone suffered an injury in Sooners practice.
Sooners on SI had reported, per a source, that Stone was working with the offense on a goal-line package when the injury occurred. Veanbles, however, says that was not the case. The OU coach told reporters that Stone “banged knees” with a member of the scout team.
Initial reports suggested that Stone could be looking at a long-term absence, possibly even the remainder of the 2026 season. Venables, however, indicated that Stone has not yet been ruled out for the Week 4 clash with No. 2 Georgia. While Stone’s X-ray was positive, the standout defender told Venables that his pain is only a 2 out of 10.

Stone is in Year 3 at Oklahoma. Last season, he appeared in all 13 games and recorded 42 total tackles with 8 TFLs, 1.5 sacks and 1 pass breakup. He entered the 2026 season with preseason All-American accolades from multiple publications and was named second-team preseason All-SEC by the conference coaches. Through 3 games, Stone has 12 total tackles with 2 TFLs and a half sack.
Oklahoma and No. 2 Georgia are set for 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday. The game will air on ESPN.
