Brent Venables declines to discuss possible staff changes after South Carolina blowout
The Oklahoma Sooners have alternated wins and losses the entire season. That didn’t change when they fell 42-25 vs. the South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday. What also didn’t change was the team’s offensive woes.
Prior to the fourth quarter, Oklahoma posted just 121 total yards and 10 points against South Carolina’s defense. With the Sooners’ usually stout defense hemorrhaging points and yards to the Gamecocks, the game quickly got out of reach to a degree that wasn’t even satisfactory for their opponent.
Despite the persistent lack of offensive success, head coach Brent Venables did not make any declarations on any alterations to his coaching staff postgame. He told Sooner Scoop’s Georga Stoia III that he wasn’t “talking about anything like that” during his press conference.

The Sooners’ offense hasn’t topped 30 points since Week 1 and has only gone over 20 points against Power 4 competition three times. The breakdown of those games isn’t pretty:
- 27 points vs. Texas, with defensive and special teams touchdowns
- 23 points at Mississippi State, who had a backup quarterback for the bulk of the game
- 25 points vs. South Carolina, with another defensive score and limited production through three quarters
If Oklahoma’s offense had any pulse, it’s possible the team could have ridden its defense to a second consecutive College Football Playoff appearance. Instead, the Sooners are now merely hoping to qualify for a bowl game. Oklahoma (4-4, 2-3 SEC) heads to Gainesville to play Florida on Nov. 7 (7:45 p.m. ET, SEC Network).
