Brent Venables recaps ‘ugly’ Oklahoma win over New Mexico

Brent Venables and the Oklahoma Sooners got back in the win column after last week’s loss to Michigan. However, it wasn’t pretty, as the offense once again really struggled in the 14-6 home win against New Mexico. It was a one-point game in the second half, but John Mateer was able to connect with Isaiah Sategna on a 53-yard pass to give the Sooners their final touchdown.
After the game, Venables talked about the ugly win against the Lobos.
“Well, that was ugly,” Brent Venables said. “Proud of the fight of our guys overcoming three turnovers in the first half. We were fortunate to be up 7-6. Those were some incredible turnovers, killers. We have got to get better. Two things can be true. Thankful for the win. Proud of the defense; they were outstanding.”
Mateer was 19-of-25 for 233 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. As Venables said, three turnovers are too many and will cost them moving forward. While the Sooners struggled to pass the ball, the rushing attack did nothing to help out. Oklahoma ran the ball 32 times for 61 yards.
The defense is good enough to keep the team in games, but the offense has to figure things out if the Sooners are going to get back to the College Football Playoff. There isn’t much time for that to happen either, as the Sooners in Week 4 will travel to Athens to take on No. 2 Georgia. After a bye, it is the rivalry game against Texas.
