The Oklahoma Sooners entered the 2026 college football season with a top-10 ranking and legitimate College Football Playoff aspirations. Now, at the midway point of the regular season and staring down a Red River showdown against hated rival Texas, it’s clear things haven’t gone the way anyone in Norman thought they would.

Oklahoma currently holds a 2-2 record, and they have gone from a top-10 team in the country to completely unranked in both the AP and Coaches Polls, and it doesn’t look like any major improvements are on the horizon for Brent Venables‘ squad.

One of the biggest issues for the Sooners all season has been their inconsistency up front on offense, and Venables touched on his offensive line’s inconsistency Tuesday afternoon at his weekly press conference.

“It’s been incredibly inconsistent and very disappointing,” Venables said. “As you build your football team, that’s a critical place. That is a place that probably requires the most development of any position that you have on your roster… Very uneven job when it comes to choosing the guys that we’ve brought in here. Way too many guys are coming and going at that position group… It’s been very unstable and certainly not the kind of development that you want from top to bottom.”

Just about any football coach will tell you that many games are won and lost in the trenches, and that a shaky offensive line will almost certainly lead to an inconsistent offense overall. Venables has been dealing with this dilemma firsthand for the past several weeks, and his frustration is clearly evident in this interview.

Things aren’t going to get any easier for that group either, as they face Collin Simmons and what is arguably the best defensive front in college football this Saturday when they take on the Longhorns.
