Cade Klubnik has struggled at times against SEC competition this season, but he did not have those struggles on the first possession of Saturday’s game against Texas.

Facing the Longhorns in the first round of the College Football Playoff, Klubnik and the Tiger offense opened with the ball on the road in Austin. Clemson would face a pair of early 3rd downs, but Klubnik proved big both times.

After picking up one with his legs, Klubnik went to the air on 3rd-and-7 in Texas’s territory. He found Antonio Williams cutting across the middle of the field for a play that went for 22 yards and a touchdown to open the game.

The opening drive of the game, Klubnik was viciously efficient while going 6-for-7 through the air for 60 yards and the touchdown. He already has a completion to 5 different Tigers while Williams recorded 2 catches for 30 yards to start the game.

It’s an encouraging start for Klubnik, especially given some of his other performances against SEC teams this season. The Tigers were kept out of the end zone in the season opener against Georgia and also struggled in the rivalry loss to South Carolina.

Klubnik did score 2 rushing touchdowns against the Gamecocks but had 2 interceptions without a passing touchdown in his 2 games against the SEC this season. Fortunately, he’s off to a strong start against the Longhorns, and the Tigers will need more big plays to get past Texas.
