Cam Newton missed several days of practice for the New England Patriots, and that gave former Alabama star Mac Jones a chance to have an extended run with the first team.

But the former Auburn star returned to practice on Thursday and Mike Reiss of ESPN updated Newton’s status with the team on “Get Up.”

Reiss said Newton started with the first-team drills, and appeared to deliver a message.

“It looked like Cam was on the field with all of his teammates around, maybe he had something to say to them, a reminder of his presence on the field,” Reiss said, who added that Newton still appears to be the incumbent starter.

Jones admitted to reporters that Thursday wasn’t his best day, and Reiss said he was 11-for-22 passing with an interception against the New York Giants. Jones also got some first-team snaps.

The Patriots have their preseason finale on Sunday against the Giants at 6 p.m.
