Coming out of its bye week, Kentucky is facing a host of issues ahead of its game with Vanderbilt this week.

Coach Mark Stoops revealed that the Wildcats are dealing “with issues with COVID. It’s not out of control. Let’s hope it stays that way.” Stoops didn’t elaborate, but also said that UK is down three staff members this week.

There is still an “or” between Terry Wilson and Joey Gatewood on the depth chart at quarterback, but the coach said the person who gives them the best opportunity to win right now will be the choice. Wilson had a good week of practice last week, Stoops added, but he also wants to see what Gatewood and third-string Beau Allen can do.

Kentucky is a 17.5-point this week against Vanderbilt.

“We need to focus on ourselves,” Stoops said. “The last time we went into a game as favorites, we got our butts kicked, utterly dominated from beginning to end.”

About the off week, Stoops added that the Cats needed this open date to get refreshed, both mentally and physically, during a 10-game SEC grind this season.

Kentucky will meet Vanderbilt at noon ET on Saturday in Lexington on the SEC Network.
