CBS analyst gives critical assessment of Alabama despite blowout win in Week1

Alabama got the 2026 season started with a 48-10 victory against East Carolina on Saturday. The Crimson Tide controlled the entire game, taking a 38-7 lead into the half. Quarterback Keelon Russell was solid in his first career game, finishing 18-of-30 for 256 yards, while also adding another 86 yards on the ground and a touchdown.
Despite the win, not everyone was impressed with Alabama as CBS analyst Richard Johnson didn’t like what he saw from the Crimson Tide.
“I thought they were sloppy,” Johnson said.
Ryan Coleman-Williams finished the game with 5 catches for 130 yards, but he once again had some of the same inconsistencies and drop issues that he had last year. The Crimson Tide brought in a lot of new players, and there are going to be some growing pains.
Just a year ago, things were far worse for the Crimson Tide as they were dominated on the road at Florida State in a game that made it feel like they were going to be terrible. They rebounded from that game to make it to the College Football Playoff, so now is not the time to panic in Tuscaloosa.
The Crimson Tide will be back in action in Week 2 at Kentucky.
