There are no days off in the SEC. Three of the conference’s unranked programs knocked off top-16 opponents in Week 6, giving credence to its depth. That made naming a Coach of the Week a tall order. But it turns out beating the best can make you the best.

On Monday, CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz named Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables the SEC Coach of the Week. Venables’ Sooners knocked off the previously unbeaten, No. 1 Texas Longhorns 27-24 in Week 6.

Kentucky head coach Will Stein and South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer provided stiff competition for the honor. Stein’s Wildcats defeated No. 10 LSU 35-34 on a two-point conversion in overtime, the exact same fashion in which Kentucky beat Beamer’s Gamecocks in Week 5. South Carolina responded, though, with a 38-19 trouncing of the No. 16 Florida Gators to end an eight-game SEC losing streak.

Oklahoma (3-2, 1-1 SEC) used a complete team effort to topple Texas. The Sooners scored a touchdown in all three phases of the game against the Longhorns:

  • 0-yard Blocked Punt TD from Dakoda Fields
  • 2-yard Rushing TD by Lloyd Avant
  • 42-yard Pick-Six from Peyton Bowen

Venables will need a similar effort from his squad to defeat No. 15 Kentucky in Week 7. The Wildcats and Sooners battle at 7:30 p.m. E.T. on Saturday (SEC Network).
