The SEC’s top three ranked schools — No. 1 Georgia, No. 6 Alabama and No. 7 Texas — lost in Week 7. All the chaos on Saturday gave CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz plenty of options for his Coach of the Week honor. But when push comes to shove, beating the best is better than the rest.
Following his Auburn Tigers‘ 27-24 victory in The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry, Alex Golesh has earned CBS Sports’ SEC Coach of the Week award for Week 7. The Tigers traveled Between the Hedges and ended Georgia’s 53-game winning streak against unranked opponents — and nine-game run of Georgia victories over Auburn — with their triumph.

Golesh, in his first year on The Plains after three years at South Florida, has Auburn at 4-2 (2-2 SEC) halfway through his debut season. ESPN’s Football Power Index gives the Tigers a 96.2% chance of reaching six victories, something their program hasn’t done since 2023. If Auburn snags a seventh win, it would be the team’s highest total since Gus Malzahn’s 9-4 season in 2019.
Reaching those thresholds would be nice, but Tiger fans can, for now, still hold out hope for a late surge and College Football Playoff appearance. Road matchups with Ole Miss and Alabama have Auburn’s CFP odds sitting at just 7.0%, though, per FPI. The Tigers host LSU at noon ET on Saturday in Week 8 (ABC).
