CFB analyst Mike Detillier calls Jarrett Guarantano ‘erratic,’ but says he has potential

Over the past weekend, many of the nation’s top quarterbacks gathered in Louisiana for the annual Manning Passing Academy.
Tennessee QB Jarrett Guarantano was among those in attendance, and it sounds like he had a bit of a mixed performance.
On Wednesday, college football analyst Mike Detillier joined “The Swain Event” show and said Guarantano was a little erratic at times, but said the best he saw from the quarterback was impressive (quotes via 247Sports):
“I’ll be honest with you, he was a little erratic throwing the ball, but that didn’t surprise me, because he’s working with receivers that he’s never worked with,” Detillier told Swain on The Swain Event. “You come here, you don’t bring the Tennessee Volunteer wide receivers with you. He’s working with receivers from Tulane, LSU, Nicholls State, Southeastern.
“He kind of blew a little bit hot and cold throwing the football, but when he was on, he was really impressive throwing the football.”
Detillier added that Guarantano’s talent is obvious, but whether or not he remains the Vols’ starter this fall depends on his mastery of the Tennessee offense:
“You can see the tremendous talent, but there was some erratic nature with [Guarantano], and I think for him, understanding the offense completely will help. And that’s something even Drew Lock brought up, and Jake Fromm brought up, was a full understanding of the offense. That’s what made Peyton Manning who he was. He was so cool when he hit the field, because he was totally prepared.
“You have to know your weaknesses. You can say, ‘I’m fully prepared for every game,’ but how many guys really are at that level? How many are fully, fully prepared. That has a lot to do with film work, study work, and that’s something Peyton preaches about.”
Guarantano will compete with Stanford graduate transfer Keller Chryst for the starting job this fall. It’s going to be a tough competition, but Guarantano got some good experience at the Manning camp, so he’ll enter the summer with a lot of confidence.
