Now into October, conference title races are starting to form, with contenders and pretenders separating themselves at either end of the pack. Prediction markets show the (#2) Georgia Bulldogs as the early-season favorites to win the SEC, following a 5-0 start with wins over Arkansas and Oklahoma. The (#5) Ohio State Buckeyes are trading as a sizeable favorite to win the Big Ten Conference amidst a 4-1 record which includes a shock loss to Texas. In the Big 12, the (#12) Utah Utes are just edging out the competition for early-season favorite status, with the Texas Tech Red Raiders right on their heels. The market suggests the ACC is a one-team race, with the (#4) Miami Hurricanes trading as an overwhelming favorite to win the conference.
College Football prediction markets allow fans to jump in and trade at any point during the season to stake their picks for future outcomes. Prices for conference winners will move in accordance with all the on-field action from upsets to Heisman moments, and everything in between.
Identifying Dark Horse Picks: Data-Backed Longshots
With the season still just five weeks old, it can be an extremely lucrative time to lock in positions on futures markets for CFB conference title winners. As conference games get into full swing throughout October, the markets can move fast in reaction to unexpected results.
Below, we detail some of the data-backed options to trade on teams that could challenge the favorites in their respective conference.
SEC
Data-Backed Longshot Pick: Alabama Crimson Tide
Omitting the favored Georgia Bulldogs from the list, data supports the Alabama Crimson Tide as a legitimate dark horse contender to win the SEC this season, thanks in large part to points per drive efficiency. Through the first five weeks of the season, Alabama features one of the most explosive and efficient offenses in the nation, averaging 3.73 points per offensive drive (7th in FBS, 49.6 PPG) while allowing 1.59 points per drive defensively, producing a strong +2.14 net points per drive. By comparison, Texas generates just 2.86 points per drive (43rd in FBS), while Florida’s defense surrenders 2.19 points per drive (102nd in FBS). Yards Per Play Dominance: Alabama leads the group in offensive potency at 7.22 yards per play (vs. 5.29 for Texas and 6.60 for LSU), yielding a +2.21 net yards per play differential.

Early conference standing and remaining strength of schedule suggest the Crimson Tide are more than just a long shot to capture the conference title this season. Alabama has come out of the gates strong with a 5-0 record (3-0 SEC), while LSU and Florida already carry conference losses (LSU lost 32-24 to Ole Miss; Florida fell 45-17 to Missouri). The Tide host pivotal showdowns against Georgia, Texas A&M, and Auburn in Tuscaloosa, while Texas faces grueling road tests at LSU and Texas A&M alongside the Red River Rivalry. With superior offensive efficiency, home-field advantages in key matchups, and an unblemished conference record, Alabama presents the strongest position to claim the SEC crown.
Big Ten
Data-Backed Longshot Pick: Indiana Hoosiers
An elite points-per-drive differential through the first month of the season suggests the defending national champion Hoosiers could make another run for a conference title in the Big Ten. Indiana ranks 2nd in the entire FBS in offensive efficiency at 4.00 points per drive (scoring 44.2 PPG) while fielding a top-10 unit defensively that surrenders just 0.98 points per drive (8th in FBS, 10.8 PAPG). That nets out to a nation-leading +3.02 net points per drive, outperforming fellow Big Ten contenders Nebraska (+2.53), Oregon (+1.99), and UCLA (+1.75). The Hoosiers average an explosive 7.87 yards per play on offense against just 4.14 allowed on defense, resulting in an overwhelming +3.73 net yards per play margin (compared to +2.24 for Nebraska and +1.82 for Oregon).
Indiana started fast with a perfect 5-0 record (2-0 Big Ten) with high-scoring wins over Northwestern (29-23) and Rutgers (47-15). Oregon already has an overall loss (39-31 at Oklahoma State) and must navigate a brutal upcoming gauntlet that includes UCLA, Nebraska, a road test at Ohio State, Michigan, and Washington. While Indiana faces tough matchups against Ohio State and Michigan, their dominant per-drive efficiency and balanced two-way metrics give them the strongest fundamental profile among the conference title long shots.
Big 12
Data-Backed Longshot Pick: BYU Cougars
Looking at the data for efficiency metrics and schedule paths, BYU emerges as the top dark horse pick to win the Big 12 Conference. The Cougars rank near the top of the conference in balanced efficiency, producing 3.30 points per drive (19th in FBS) while surrendering just 1.30 points allowed per drive (28th in FBS), good for a sterling +2.00 net points per drive margin and a dominant +2.30 net yards per play margin (6.81 offensive YPP vs. 4.50 defensive YPP).

BYU gave themselves a real chance starting the season unbeaten at 4-0 (2-0 Big 12), whereas Houston already holds a conference defeat (falling 28-26 to Texas Tech) and Oklahoma State already dropped an early game to Tulsa. Although Texas Tech is 5-0 (2-0 Big 12) and currently priced significantly higher than BYU in Big 12 conference title futures, their +1.41 net points per drive and +1.01 net YPP trail BYU significantly, and Texas Tech must travel to Stillwater to face Oklahoma State later in the season. With four of their final six conference matchups in Provo, BYU provides the strongest statistical profile and pathway to capture the Big 12 title relative to market pricing.
