We just finished a massive conference expansion after the Pac-12 exploded and the Big Ten, Big 12, and ACC swallowed the rest of the teams. The ACC could be next, but Insider Brett McMurphy revealed that two ACC teams are already gaining traction with the Big Ten and the SEC.
On Wednesdayโs episode of โAndy & Ari,โ On3 Sportsโ college football insider Brett McMurphy said that North Carolina and Virginia are the 2 teams that would pick up steam between the SEC and the Big Ten.
โI donโt know about you guys, I was surprised you didnโt say 24 because I think you know that kind of what Andy laid out, I think weโre going to be 20 or 24 with the SEC and the Big Ten,โ McMurphy said. โThe question is, what is going on with the Big 12 and the ACC, and will they be allowed to be part of that group? I think itโs very clear โฆ look, after I reported that this morning, I immediately got a text from someone within the SEC and said what Iโve been thinking: North Carolina and Virginia will be highly contested between both conferences.
โAnd where they end up, look, no one knows. Itโs impossible to say, but I do really believe that they are the most attractive to both leagues. And weโll have to see what happens.โ
Here’s a video of McMurphy’s report, via On3 Sports:
If one of these teams left, you would have to assume that the two would end up working together on a package deal. It would likely not be split between one school heading to the Big Ten and the other to the SEC.
The ACC and its member institutions can not negotiate a new grant of rights for their TV contracts until 2030, initially 2036. This could get really interesting as the days progress.
