Chaz Coleman is finally back in Knoxville, with the prized defensive end transfer from Penn State returning to Tennessee on Friday.

But that hardly means Coleman is all set to go with the Volunteers for the 2026 season. In fact, according to a report on Saturday morning by Brent Hubbs of Volquest, Coleman’s future with Tennessee football “remains a mystery,” as Hubbs posted in his report on social media.

Coleman had been “MIA” since early April, as Hubbs reported, and his own social media went “dark” too, most notably Coleman’s Instagram.

On3’s Chris Low reported earlier this week that Coleman had yet to report to summer workouts at Tennessee. Coleman’s recent absence was another red flag after he was also absent from the last few weeks of spring practice. The Volunteers began voluntary workouts this week, and Coleman was again nowhere to be found until his return on Friday.

Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel spoke about Coleman’s issues on Wednesday.

“Chaz has been dealing with some things, and we’re here to support him,” Heupel said, via On3. “We’ll continue to go through that process.”

With Coleman being one of Tennessee’s most notable transfer additions during the offseason, a lot was expected of him this fall, and that still could happen. The Volunteers beat out Ohio State in luring Coleman out of the Big Ten and into the SEC.

Coleman is an Ohio product, so Tennessee also managed to lure him away from returning to his home state after spending the 2025 season at Penn State.

With or without Coleman this season, Tennessee will be chasing an SEC title in 2026. Here is what the Kalshi market is currently saying about the SEC teams it believes have the best shot to be holding that prestigious conference trophy come December:
