In an interesting move, Clemson and Notre Dame are reportedly finalizing a major scheduling agreement outside of the standing agreement that the Fighting Irish have with the ACC.

Ross Dellenger with Yahoo Sports was among those to report the details of the agreement. According to Dellenger, it would be a 12-year agreement between the two programs, and the matchup vs. Clemson would count toward one of Notre Dame’s 5 regularly scheduled games against ACC opponents. However, the deal is independent of the structure involving the agreement between the ACC and Notre Dame.

Dellenger also reports that Notre Dame is expected to play Florida State and Miami, 2 of the marquee brands in the conference, on a more regular basis.

The 12-year deal is set to begin in the 2027 season and run through 2038. The agreement is particularly geared toward Clemson boosting its status and potential ratings in the new brand-based distribution model for revenue. Dellenger also reports that Notre Dame officials have publicly “stumped” for the Irish to face more of the ACC’s premier brands regularly.

In the expanded College Football Playoff, many fans wondered if marquee regular-season matchups would fall by the wayside, but the exact opposite appears to be happening. The new ACC model is undoubtedly part of the equation, but it incentivizes teams in the league to play marquee games as much as possible moving forward.
