Rece Davis believes season opener between Georgia-Clemson could be No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown

The best game of the regular season may arrive the first weekend of the 2021 season.
That’s an idea Rece Davis recently discussed during an appearance on the Saturday Down South Podcast.
When the conversation turned to Georgia, the inability of Kirby Smart’s program to beat Nick Saban and Alabama was discussed by the ESPN College GameDay host.
“I think (Georgia) should be in position to do it this year if they can let go of that mindset that they can’t be complete until they beat Alabama,” Davis said on the show. “Is it going to be less fulfilling to (Georgia) if they beat Texas A&M or if they beat somebody in the SEC Championship game and they don’t get a chance to beat Alabama and exorcise that metaphorical demon or whatever.
“I do think that’s a big deal. I think it’s been something that’s been hanging over that program a little bit, so we’ll see if they’re able to take that step forward in that regard this year. They should.”
But before Georgia can even line up another matchup against Alabama, the Bulldogs have to face Clemson.
The way Davis tells it, the season opener in Charlotte could be a matchup of the nation’s top two teams in the preseason polls.
“Right now, I’m leaning a little bit to have (Georgia) preseason No. 1,” Davis added. “We might even have preseason No. 1 and No. 2 playing in Charlotte — in some order — when Clemson and Georgia play early in the season.”
