Cole Cubelic of the SEC Network and WJOX is widely viewed as the top college football analyst for offensive linemen, and he’s come out with his top 5 centers in the SEC entering this season.
Auburn’s Nick Brahms leads the pack, followed by Missouri’s Michael Maietti, LSU’s Liam Shanahan, Ole Miss’ Ben Brown and Alabama’s Chris Owens.
Cubelic is mostly in agreement with the Rimington Trophy Watch List, which pegged 3 of the 5 on its own preseason group: Brahms, Shanahan and Maietti.
Brahms is a returning starter and has made 21 career starts for the Tigers. Maietti, a Rutgers transfer, has started every game at center dating back to the 2017 season with Rutgers.
Shanahan transferred from Harvard before the 2020 season, and played every offensive snap for LSU in 2020.
Last season, Brown made his 32nd consecutive start and played every snap at center in the Egg Bowl victory.
Owens replaced All-American Landon Dickerson in the SEC Championship Game against Florida, and overall played in 11 games with 3 starts.
