Former Arkansas QB Ryan Mallett’s status as Joe Flacco’s backup could be in jeopardy.

It has been widely reported that the Baltimore Ravens are considering signing free-agent QB Colin Kaepernick, whose decision to first sit and later kneel during the national anthem has been a source of controversy and reportedly kept him off an NFL roster since he opted out of his contract in March. Edward Lee of the Baltimore Sun reports that if the Ravens sign Kaepernick, it would likely be to assume the role of backup quarterback.

“We’re worried about the Ravens right now,” Mallett said Sunday, per Lee. “If he comes, cool. If he doesn’t, cool. We don’t really care about that right now.”

Unfortunately for Mallett, his turn as the first-string quarterback got off to a rocky start. With Flacco sidelined due to back stiffness, Mallett threw seven interceptions over the course of Friday and Saturday’s practices. On Sunday, however, Mallett cut down on the mistakes. The former Razorback said he’s adjusting to working with the first-team unit, specifically the receivers.

“I haven’t had much of an opportunity to work with them until this spring a little bit and now,” he said. “So I’m starting to feel more comfortable with them, and we’re getting more cohesive as a unit – the line, the backs, the tight ends – and I feel good about it.”

Mallett is entering his seventh season in the NFL. He joined the Ravens during the 2015 season and signed a one-year contract extension in March.
