Colin Simmons sets Longhorns record after stat correction adds extra 0.5 sack

The No. 1-ranked Texas Longhorns picked up a massive SEC road win in Week 4 when they traveled up to Rocky Top and knocked off a top-15 Tennessee Volunteers squad in a sold-out Neyland Stadium.
Arch and the offense struggled to find any sort of rhythm in the 20-17 victory, but the Horns’ elite defense picked up the slack with a truly dominant showing, completely shutting down Faizon Brandon and the rest of the Volunteers’ offense.
Star Texas pass rusher Colin Simmons, in particular, was unstoppable, and he officially set program history Monday afternoon when he was awarded an extra half sack after a review by both Tennessee and the Horns. Per Texas insider Danny Davis, this correction officially set a new Longhorns record for sacks in a single game, a record that former Texas legend Shane Dronett held for 36 years.

Simmons’ unique ability to wreak havoc in opposing backfields by putting quarterbacks on the ground is nothing new, as he racked up 9 total sacks as a true freshman in 2024 and followed that up by leading the entire SEC with 12 last season.
As things stand, Simmons is on pace to shatter that mark in what is likely to be his final season at the collegiate level, sitting at 7.5 sacks after his dominant Week 4 showing.
If he can maintain his current pace, he could end up blowing past Will Anderson Jr.’s single-season SEC record of 17.5 sacks, a mark the former Alabama standout set back in 2021.
