Central Michigan quarterback John Keller is in critical condition after being shot in the chest early Saturday morning.

Keller is in his second season with the Chippewa program, which is coached by former Florida coach Jim McElwain. Keller did not see game action in 2020, as he sat out because of NCAA transfer requirements. Keller spent his first collegiate season at Cincinnati, where he redshirted and did not see game action.

Central Michigan Life reported that the incident happened at apartment complex after police received word of gunshots fired at an off-campus party around 1 a.m. Saturday morning. After some people arrived at the party, a fight broke out and, according to a press release issued by the Isabella Sheriff’s Department, someone went to a vehicle during the fight, retrieved a weapon and began firing upon returning to the party.

A GoFundMe account has already raised more than $6,000 to support Keller and his family paying medical expenses.

“John was shot in the chest by an unknown assailant. Right now John is fighting for his life at Hurley Medical Center and remains in critical condition after being life flighted from another hospital near by. With John’s condition being critical, medical expenses will be extensive throughout his recovery. I ask of everyone to keep John and his family in your prayers during this difficult time. With the help from your generous donations, we can ease the Keller family from the stress brought from medical expenses.”
