Dabo Swinney comments on mutual cancelation of Clemson-Georgia series: ‘I hate it’

Dabo Swinney usually doesn’t shy away from speaking his mind, so Tuesday’s session with reporters got really candid when the Clemson head coach was asked about Clemson and Georgia canceling a home-and-home series that would’ve taken place between 2029 and 2033.
According to a report on Monday night by the Athens Banner-Herald, the 2 programs mutually agreed to cancel 4 future games that would’ve taken place in 2029, 2030, 2032 and 2033. The 2030 and 2032 games would’ve been at Georgia, while Clemson would’ve hosted the other 2 matchups in 2029 and 2033.
The future matchups between the Tigers and Bulldogs were canceled because of the SEC and ACC shifting to a 9-game conference schedule, according to Monday night’s report.
With that recent development as a backdrop, Swinney took the microphone on Tuesday and told reporters exactly how he felt about the cancelations.
“I hate it, because I just think it’s great for fans, and I get it. We’ve been playing 10 forever around here, but going to 9 conference games, a lot of these leagues are going. I wish it was less. I wish everybody played 7 conference games, and then you had more crossover games all throughout college football, but it is what it is,” Dabo Swinney said.
Clemson and Georgia could still theoretically agree to play neutral-site games in the future instead of the home-and-home series that has reportedly been canceled. But Swinney’s point was that there should be less conference matchups and more showdowns between high-profile programs from different leagues like, for example, Clemson and Georgia.
While Georgia and Clemson grapple with the future, there is a 2026 season that is playing out now, and both teams are battling to get into the College Football Playoff. Here is what the Kalshi market is currently saying about the top odds to make the 12-team field when it is announced in December:
