Dae’Quan Wright clears NFL waivers, now set to join LSU

Perhaps the story of August in college football has taken one step closer to becoming a reality. Former Ole Miss tight end Dae’Quan Wright has cleared the NFL waiver wire after being waived by the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.
Wright is now set to officially join LSU after committing to play for Lane Kiffin and the Tigers, also on Sunday. Adam Schefter reported that Wright will join the Tigers on Wednesday.
Wright, of course, played for current LSU head coach Lane Kiffin last season and the year prior at Ole Miss. He collected 635 receiving yards during his senior season but went undrafted and entered preseason with the Browns.
The NCAA’s recent adoption of their new 5-in-5 eligibility model paved the way for Wright — a member of the Class of 2022 — to earn another season in college, which he (and Kiffin) have taken advantage of.
On Tuesday, Kiffin was asked about colleges adding professional players. He insisted that he is against pros playing in college sports but also argued that Wright is not a pro player — he’s a college player who is a member of a “specific class who was wronged by the NCAA.”
LSU kicks off its season on Sept. 5 when the Tigers face off against Clemson in Baton Rouge.
