Former Mississippi State linebacker Tyrus Wheat is expected to sign a deal with the Dallas Cowboys, according to a report from CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz.
Wheat, who played at Mississippi State from 2020-2022, will be heading back to Dallas after 1 season in Detroit. Wheat signed a rookie deal with the Cowboys after going undrafted in 2023 and played 2 seasons for the Cowboys before landing in Detroit last season.
Wheat has almost exclusively played a reserve role in the NFL. So far across his career he’s totaled 32 tackles, 2 sacks and 2 tackles for loss and has yet to start in a game.
While he’s struggled to see the field in the NFL (so far), Wheat was a freight train in the SEC — especially when it came to pressuring the quarterback. The former Bulldog finished his college career with 129 combined tackles, 27 tackles for loss and 18.5 sacks across 3 balanced seasons. Wheat also totaled 3 interceptions, 3 forced fumbles, 5 fumble recoveries and 6 pass deflections with Mississippi State.
Speaking of Mississippi State, the Bulldogs basketball team is set to face off against Auburn in the SEC Tournament on Wednesday. Here’s a look at the latest odds to win this matchup, via Kalshi:
