There’s no shortage of ways to change or improve the college football playoff system, but NBC Sports’ Mike Tirico has one problem.

“There are 100 really good ideas,” Tirico said during a recent appearance on The Dan Patrick Show. “There’s not one drop of leadership and vision to take those ideas to market. That’s the problem right now.”

Patrick laid out a plan with five 10- or 12-team conferences, and 16 of the 50 teams, for example, make the playoff. He said to get the television networks together and make it a TV show, and base it off of the NFL postseason model and sort of a lead in to the NFL playoffs. Patrick even suggested relegation with teams like Maryland, Rutgers and Syracuse. He also added the idea of paying the players involved, and that they can use their name, image and likeness for profit.

Tirico added that the college football system has to fit in the fabric of each university and can’t just be a semi-professional sport.

“The sport is so lacking for leadership and it’s just creating bigger problems,” Tirico said.

Tirico added that the wave of legislation in states across the country could lead to Power 5 schools breaking away from the NCAA. He said FBS teams playing FCS teams is like Major League Baseball teams playing a minor league opponent.

“The whole sport needs a complete overhaul and there’s nobody standing up saying let’s do this,” Tirico said.
