Oklahoma is off to a frustrating 2-2 start this season as it heads into the Red River Rivalry clash with No. 1 Texas. A major reason for that is the uneven play of quarterback John Mateer.
Now CBS Sports’ Danny Kanell is making an unflattering declaration regarding Mateer’s second year as a Sooner. Kanell believes no one in the sport this season has underperformed to the extent as the 6-foot-1 senior.
“[John] Mateer has probably been the biggest disappointment in college football based on the expectations coming in. There have been a lot of quarterbacks that we’re talking about today, some have come in with massive expectations, but Mateer has just been really disappointing…” Kanell said. “It’s just been the back-breaking turnovers, which have absolutely crushed Oklahoma’s hopes. They have a top-5 defense in the country and they’re losing games.”
Mateer has passed for 883 yards with 8 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. In Oklahoma‘s losses to Michigan and Georgia, he made untimely mistakes that Kanell called out.
For the Sooners to have any chance against the Longhorns, Mateer will have to summon his A-game. Texas allows 13.3 points per game, which ranks as 12th in the nation.
Texas vs. Oklahoma in Dallas is set for 3:30 p.m. ET (ABC).
