We have one more game remaining in Week 1 of the college football season, with No. 19 SMU battling Florida State tonight. However, Danny Kanell isn’t waiting until Tuesday to reflect on the Week 1 action.
Monday morning, Kanell took to Twitter/X to rank his top 12 teams in college football. Six SEC teams, including Auburn, made his list, with LSU and Ole Miss at the top.
LSU is everyone’s big winner of the weekend following its demolition of Clemson. Lane Kiffin‘s squad had to wait an extra two hours to open its season because of the rain in Baton Rouge, but that weather wound up being a preview of what was to come. The Tigers’ 51-10 victory is the largest loss of Dabo Swinney’s career.
Ole Miss wasn’t nearly as all-around dominant as LSU, but its offense looked just as prolific as it was in 2025 despite Kiffin’s departure. Trinidad Chambliss posted 396 total yards and four touchdowns (three passing, one rushing) before Lucas Carneiro’s 48-yard field goal pushed the Rebels to a 41-38 win over the Louisville Cardinals.
Auburn’s two-point conversion stop against Baylor was just enough grab Kanell’s attention, while Alabama‘s, Texas‘ and Georgia‘s blowout wins against lesser foes got them on the backend of his rankings. Beyond the six SEC schools, Kanell had four Big Ten teams, one ACC team and an independent on his list.
