College football’s Week 5 slate had intrigue, but quickly became defined by blowout wins in the biggest matchups. The results didn’t leave much hemming or hawing for Danny Kanell when releasing his updated top 12 teams.
Kanell revealed his best squads in the sport early Sunday morning. Last week, his rankings included six SEC schools. This go-round, they only listed four: the Alabama Crimson Tide, Texas Longhorns, Georgia Bulldogs and Ole Miss Rebels.
Alabama, No. 2 in Kanell’s Week 4 rankings, moved to No. 1 after a 56-23 trouncing of the Mississippi State Bulldogs, whom Kanell had at No. 3 entering action. Crimson Tide quarterback Keelon Russell dominated on Saturday, firmly establishing himself as a frontrunner in the Heisman Trophy race, while Kane Wommack’s defense forced four turnovers to continue its bullish start to the campaign.
Georgia, following a 38-14 win over Vanderbilt, sits at No. 5 on Kanell’s list. The Bulldogs weren’t as thoroughly dominant vs. the Commodores as they were in September, but still prevailed by a massive margin. Gunner Stockton completed 78.1% of his passes (25/32) for 295 yards and three touchdowns in the victory.
Texas (No. 2) and Ole Miss (No. 12) both enjoyed byes in Week 5. Alabama and Georgia battle for early conference supremacy in Week 6.
